Koh Samui - Page 3
Food and Drink
As well as being the main produce of Samui, coconuts add a distinctive
flavour to the island's cuisine. Visitors will find plenty of hotels,
restaurants, and bungalow complexes where they can sample the local
specialities. Western food is also on the menu at many of these establishments.
Beaches
Samui has some of the best beaches in Thailand with excellent facilities
for swimming and water sports. Chaweng on the east side of Samui is
the islands longest beach and a good place to go wind surfing. A little
further south is Lamai which has plenty of accommodation and good facilities.
At the north-east corner of the island is Choeng Mon Beach. You will
also find numerous little bays and coves all around Samui.
Night Life
The town of Na Thon or Chaweng and Lamai beach resorts are the place
for night owls. Here you will find bars and discos which stay open until
the early hours.
Shopping
There are plenty of places where you can buy clothing, toiletries,
souvenirs, art, handicrafts, and gifts to take home. Don't expect to
find any shopping malls, but you will have no trouble finding most of
the things you need.
Sight Seeing
If you like waterfalls Hid Lad is 3km from the port of Na Thon, or
you could visit the more scenic Na Muang which is in the centre of the
island.
Samui has a couple of temples worth visiting, the more interesting
of which is the Temple of the Big Buddha located at the end of a causeway
at the north-east corner of the island. Please remember to wear proper
attire (no shorts) when inside a temple grounds.
There are several small islands which you can explore, all within easy
reach of Samui. Koh Phangan, about a 40 minute boat ride to the north,
has some nice beaches and a couple of waterfalls. Others worth visiting
are Koh Tae and Koh Tao.
