Most of the damage has been repaired. How can you help? Come and spend you holidays in these areas. By spending money in the local economy you will be helping the people. Without your continuing patronage they will be hard pressed to survive and rebuild their shattered lives.

Krabi, which sits on the banks of the Krabi River, is located 180km by road from Phuket town and almost 1000km from Bangkok. The area around Krabi was "discovered" by tourists about 10 years ago, but it has not suffered from excessive development and remains unspoiled.

About 17km from Krabi town is the village of Ao Nang which has a good selection of accomadation for those wishing to stay near the local beaches.

Best time to visit is between November and April when the climate is at it's best. During the monsoon season, when the seas are high, tour boats do not sail to the offshore islands.

Getting There

Buses leave from the terminal in Phuket town every afternoon and take about 3 hours to reach Krabi. There is also a bus service from Surat Thani which takes 4 to 4½ hours.

The new airport is currently under construction and scheduled to be completed in 1999.

Getting around

The town is quite small so most places can easily be reached on foot. Songthaews are available for longer journeys around town or to one of the nearby beaches.

Those who prefer to have their own transport can hire small motorcycles by the day. Read the agreement carefully before you ride away, and don't forget to wear sensible clothing.
